SCI702 - Getting to Know our Earth and Space

Introduction

Welcome to the Year 7 Earth and Space Science Revision Course! This course is designed to help you revisit and deepen your understanding of the fundamental concepts in Earth and Space science that you have explored throughout the year. Earth and Space science is an exciting field that helps us understand our planet, its place in the universe, and the natural processes that shape our environment.

In this course, we will focus on five key topics:

  1. The Stars and Planets:

    • Learn about the stars and planets that make up our solar system and beyond. Understand the characteristics of different celestial bodies, such as the Sun, the planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. We will explore how these objects are formed and their roles within the solar system.
  2. Day, Month, Year, and Time:

    • Discover how the movements of the Earth and Moon create the cycles of day and night, months, and years. We will investigate how the Earth's rotation on its axis results in day and night and how its orbit around the Sun defines the year. Additionally, we will explore the lunar cycle and its influence on our calendar months.
  3. The Water Cycle:

    • Explore the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. We will study the processes of evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection, understanding how water cycles through different forms and locations. Learn how this cycle is essential for sustaining life and maintaining Earth's ecosystems.
  4. Natural Resources:

    • Understand what natural resources are and why they are crucial for human survival and economic development. We will examine various types of natural resources, including renewable resources like water and wind, and non-renewable resources like fossil fuels and minerals. We will also discuss the importance of conserving these resources for future generations.

Course Goals

By the end of this revision course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the key characteristics of stars, planets, and other celestial bodies in our solar system.
  • Explain how the Earth's movements create cycles of day and night, months, and years.
  • Understand the stages of the water cycle and its significance for life on Earth.
  • Recognize different types of natural resources and discuss their uses and the importance of conservation.

Course Structure

This course is structured into interactive sessions, each dedicated to one of the key topics. You will engage in a variety of activities, including hands-on experiments, discussions, and assessments that will reinforce your understanding and help you apply the concepts. Active participation and curiosity are encouraged to make the most of this learning experience.

Final Thoughts

This revision course is an excellent opportunity to solidify your knowledge of Earth and Space science, preparing you for future studies in science and beyond. Let's embark on this journey to explore the wonders of our planet and the universe, and to understand the natural processes that make life on Earth possible!
